Praying the Psalms

Praying the Psalms
Praying the Psalms - Guide

1. Choose a Psalm
  • Start with ones that are easy to pray:
    • Praise → Psalm 100, 103, 145
    • Lament/Struggle → Psalm 13, 42, 51
    • Trust → Psalm 23, 27, 91

2. Read Slowly
  • Read a verse or two out loud.
  • Let the words settle, take your time.

3. Turn the Words into Prayer
  • Make the psalmist’s words your own words.
  • Example:
    • Psalm 23:1 — “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
    • Prayer: “Lord, thank You for being my shepherd. Provide for me today, and calm my fears about the future.”

4. Insert Your Life Into the Psalm
  • If the Psalm speaks of enemies, you might pray about challenges, temptations, or fears.
  • If it praises God’s creation, you might thank Him for specific blessings in your life.

5. Pause and Listen
  • After praying through a section, take a moment of silence.
  • Ask: “God, what are You showing me here?”

6. Close in Worship or Surrender
  • End by praising God, asking for strength, or simply resting in His presence.

Example With Psalm 27:1
  • Verse: “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”
  • Prayer: “God, You are my light in dark places. Drive out fear in my heart about [specific situation]. Remind me that You are my salvation.”
